How To Use the 10 Week Holiday Organizing Plan

By Sarah Aguirre, About.com

Imagine that after 10 weeks of planning and executing your plans, you come to the end of a very successful holiday season. Traditions were enhanced, love was exchanged, and your sanity was kept. How do you make it work?

What Is the 10 Week Plan?

The 10 Week Holiday Plan breaks down all of the tasks that you have to do during the holiday season into weekly focus areas with specific tasks to complete during a week. Instead of trying to cram all of your decorating, cleaning, organizing, buying, and planning into the two weeks before a large holiday event, try doing a little at a time to truly transform your holiday season.

How To Customize the 10 Week Plan

The 10 Week Holiday Plan is a guide. Because your families' traditions are as unique as your individual family, the guide can be customized. It relies on the principle that no matter what holiday you are celebrating, or what way you choose to celebrate, there are certain things that need to be done. Planning, cleaning, organizing, buying, and scheduling are broken down into weekly tasks that can be modified according to your needs.

The 10 Focus Areas

Week 1:Planning and Clutter

Clear the way for an organized holiday season by getting rid of clutter and getting some early planning done.

Week 2: Living Areas and Budgets

The living areas see a lot of use during the holiday season because of how much we tend to entertain. Have your living areas ready for unexpected guests or full parties.

Week 3: Kitchen and Pantry

Our kitchen and pantry will need to be in tip top shape to pull of effortless cooking and entertaining. Have your kitchen ready to help you make the holiday season tasty and memorable.

Week 4: Dining Rooms

Trying to get the dining and serving areas of your home in shape for family feasts can be intimidating. Get all of your serving and dining areas ready for the holidays.

Week 5: Bathrooms and Guest Rooms

Bathrooms and guest rooms may be the more hidden areas of our homes, but people spend a lot of time alone in both rooms. We want them to be clean, organized, and comfortable.

Week 6: Bedrooms

You're nearly done cleaning all of the rooms of your home, and as a reward, let's spend this week turning your room and all the bedrooms in your home into the comfortable and inviting places they should be.

Week 7: Closets and Storage

There are a lot of things that will be going back into storage in a few weeks. Take the time now to clean up that storage and closets as we prepare for the holiday season.

Week 8: Quick Cleanups

We've managed to complete the bulk of our cleaning, so this week we're focusing on cleaning things quickly so we can accomplish a lot of other tasks.

Week 9: Maintaining

With the days until Christmas numbered...maintenance is the goal. You've already done the hardest work. Now, just minutes a day will help you stay on track to an organized holiday.

Week 10: Celebrating and Recovering

This is the week for celebrating! Just 10 weeks ago you wondered how you'd ever get everything ready in time. And now it's time to enjoy.
