Downy Unstopables

We're all used to additions to our laundry to make sure that our clothes come out looking and smelling great. But Downy Unstopables is a more recent product on the market, primarily designed to make and keep laundry smelling great. These tiny beads are meant to be added directly to the drum of the washing machine at the beginning of the wash cycle. The idea is that they will gradually be broken down directly during the wash. When the clothes are finished washing and drying, they are supposed to smell wonderful. Clothes are also supposed to retain that smell for a longer period of time.

Downy Unstopables: Directions

Downy Unstopables are meant to be used directly in the drum of the washing machine. The directions say to add as much or as little as you want into the cap. Next, toss the beads directly into the drum of either an high efficiency or a regular washing machine. Finally add the clothing before beginning the wash cycle. The beads will dissolve in the wash leaving behind the scent.

My Experience

I like to walk the cleaning aisles and randomly add items to my cart that I haven't tried yet. Although I tried a single load sample of Downy Unstopables that had been sent by the manufacturers, I hadn't felt like that had been enough to give a thorough review. This time I bought a full-sized bottle and went home to tackle the laundry. I liked the feature that allowed me to lightly squeeze the bottle in order to test the scent. I ended up going with the fresh scent because it seemed closest to the other product scents I use on a regular basis. I was a little disappointed that the scents didn't seem to coordinate to other major scents of laundry detergents , fabric softener, or dryer sheets. When I got home and started my first load, I was a little confused about how much I should add to the washing machine. The recommended amount is a cap full, but you can add as much or little as you want. I opted for a full cap full. It was definitely easy to use. By the time the load was done in the washer, I could smell the scent. I added the clothes to the dryer, and could still smell the scent when they were finished. After the load of towels was folded and put away, I continued to check on them to see how long the scent lasted. For a few days I could still smell the scent the minute I opened the linen closet. By the 4th day, it seemed to have faded. My experience with the rest of the loads was very consistent no matter how much of the Unstopables I used.

Downy Unstopables Details

Downy Unstopables come in 2 scents, Fresh and Lush. Unstopables come in 13.2 oz bottles. Unstopables retail for around 7.00 a bottle. The amount of loads you get out of a bottle will depend on how much you add.

Downy Unstopables Final Thoughts

While I understand and appreciate the idea behind the product, Downy Unstopables didn't seem to deliver enough of a difference compared to a regular routine of fabric softener or dryer sheets. Adding an extra step and expense to the laundry routine may turn a lot of consumers off, while others will appreciate the added boost of scent that the product definitely provides. Downy has said that the scent boost can last for up to 12 weeks. During my tests, the most I was able to duplicate was 2 weeks, and that was only after I had used quite a bit of the product. I was also a little disappointed that I wasn't able to coordinate the scents of all of my laundry products together. This might be another disappointment for other consumers as well. Other consumers might not like that the product is essentially perfume and dye. This could present problems for those with allergies or issues with products that contain scents and dyes.

Stop. Do you know what its like to not be able to be socially active? This is a real disability. There are so many women and some men who are developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and its a shame to see these stinky toxic synthetic chemicals created. Its time to think about our common environment, and about people who get seriously ill when people wear 'fragrant' products. What we need, are products that environmentally safe(r), and not more toxicants. Stop the craziness, and find other safe alternatives to wash and dry your clothing or items. Tree nut soaps are safe to wash your clothing, and woolies dryer balls are safe to dry them. You can make your own woolies dryer balls or you can order them on-line. You can always add essential oils to them if you need a scent. Please stop and think about our common environment, as its a human right, to breathe, work, and live within our community.
