Choose a Type of Automatic Dishwasher Detergent

Pros and Cons of All Three Types

By Sarah Aguirre, About.com

I don't know about you, but I love my dishwasher. It's like a magic machine where I throw dirty dishes only to have them cleaned with little effort on my part. But to get them clean, my machine needs the right detergent. There are three main types of automatic dishwasher detergent. What kind is right for you?

Powdered Dishwasher Detergent

Powdered dishwasher detergent is made up of little granules that are poured into the dispenser. This is what most people think of as dishwasher detergent.

Pros of Powdered Dishwasher Detergent

May be less expensive.

Cons of Powdered Dishwasher Detergent

Not premeasured.
Easier to spill.
Has to dissolve.

Gel Automatic Dishwasher Detergent

Gel dishwasher detergent are becoming increasingly popular. Like a slow pouring liquid, gels allow a little more control when dispensing the detergent.

Pros of Gel Detergent

Easy to dispense.
Less chance of spilling.
Starts to work right away.

Cons of Gel Detergent

May be more expensive.

Tablet Dishwasher Detergent

Tablet dishwasher detergents have a compact amount of dishwasher detergent in a premeasured tablet that makes it easy to put just the right amount of detergent into the dispenser. While most tablets are in a compact powdered form, there are some makers who have gel tablets as well.

Pros of Tablet Detergent

Premeasured.
Easy to dispense.
Can choose powdered or gel.

Cons of Tablet Detergent

Hard water homes may need to use two.
May be expensive.
